ตำบลวังใหม่ เป็นตำบลหนึ่งซึ่งตั้งอยู่ทางทิศตะวันตกของอำเภอเมือง จังหวัดชุมพร ซึ่งได้แบ่งแยกจากตำบลวังไผ่ เมื่อปี พ.ศ. 2518 มีพื้นที่ ทั้งหมด 81.81 ตารางกิโลเมตร เนื่องจากตำบลวังไผ่ มีพื้นที่กว้างมาก แบ่งการปกครองออกเป็น 14 หมู่บ้าน จึงยากต่อการปกครองในสมัยนั้น โดย นายเบ่ง อนิวัฒน์ ซึ่งดำรงตำแหน่งกำนันตำบลวังไผ่ พร้อมกับนายมังกร  โชติคุต ซึ่งดำรงตำแหน่งประธานสภาจังหวัดชุมพรได้ดำเนินการขอแยกตำบล โดยแยกหมู่ที่ 4,8,11,14 ออกจากตำบลวังไผ่ และได้ประชุมผู้นำของหมู่บ้านและผู้ทรงคุณวุฒิ ในการตั้งชื่อตำบลและมีมติให้ตั้งชื่อตำบลวังใหม่ และแบ่งการปกครองเป็น 5 หมู่บ้าน
